National general strike June 21 between 09:00 and 13:00, 24-hour strike by teachers; associated march in Montevideo

The PIT-CNT union has called for a four-hour general strike to take place on Wednesday, June 21. Workers from various industries represented by the umbrella PIT-CNT union will take part between 09:00 and 13:00 (local time). Education workers in the private and public sectors will be on strike for the full day. Striking workers will gather in the capital Montevideo at the Intendencia de Montevideo building before marching via Avenida 18 de Julio (the city’s main artery) to the Torre Ejecutiva building, the seat of the presidency. Traffic disruptions are possible along the march route in the morning and early afternoon. The protest will likely remain peaceful, but low-intensity violence cannot be ruled out.

Context

The union is calling for better salaries and better working conditions, among other demands.
