Uruguay: Unionized workers plan strikes, demonstrations Oct. 15-16 nationwide to defend shorter work week, demand greater education spending

Unionized workers affiliated with the Inter-Union Plenary of Workers-National Convention of Workers (Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores - Convencion Nacional de Trabajadores, PIT-CNT) in various sectors, including higher education, are planning several strikes and demonstrations nationwide Oct. 15-16. The actions aim to defend a shorter working week and press for more education spending. In Montevideo, participants will gather at the intersection of 18 de Julio and Ejido from 09:00 Oct. 16 before marching to Andes Street, where they will likely demonstrate at Plaza Independencia. Other potential gathering points across the country include universities, government buildings, and public squares. Disruptions to university activities are possible.

Heightened security, as well as localized transit and business disruptions, are likely near protests.
