Burkina Faso: Exchange of fire near Burkina Faso-Mali border July 12

Event

Seven to eight suspected jihadists were pushed back following an exchange of fire with security forces on Wednesday morning, July 12, in the municipality of Doumbala, near the Mali border in northwest Burkina Faso. No injuries were reported. The assailants, who remain unidentified, reportedly escaped after fleeing toward the Malian border. Burkina Faso authorities are conducting a manhunt to apprehend the attackers.

Context

Terrorism has become an increasing security threat in Burkina Faso, especially in its volatile north, where suspected terrorists were also spotted in Bénéma village near the Mali border on July 9. Over 30 people died in nearly a dozen attacks since January 2017 alone.
