Canada: Ground crew strikes at Pearson airport in Toronto July 27

Around 700 ground crew workers go on strike at Pearson International Airport in Toronto on July 27; no delays reported

Warning

Event

Grounds crew workers went on strike at approximately 22:00 (local time) on Thursday, July 27, at Pearson International Airport (YYZ) in Toronto. Around 700 workers are participating in the strike, including baggage handlers, cargo handlers, cabin cleaners, and other staff. Media sources reported on Friday, July 28, that no significant delays have occurred.

Context

Members of the Teamsters Local 419 union decided to go on strike after overwhelmingly rejecting an offer from Swissport on July 27. According to union leaders, the action is not designed to delay travelers and is only a message to Swissport management. The union claims that Swissport is attempting to pass a wage freeze and make a new policy that would require staff to work at least 30 hours a week in order to qualify for benefits.

Advice

Travelers are advised to confirm their flight status with their airline prior to their departure to the airport.
