Colombia: Nationwide anti-pension reform protests July 18
Multiple unions planning nationwide anti-pension reform protests on July 18
Event
On Tuesday, July 18, the CUT, CTC, and Confederations of Pensioners unions will hold nationwide protests to denounce a law that decreases pension contributions from 12 to 4 percent. The unions are also demanding an increase to the pension allowance by the same percentage as minimum wage rather than by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as well as an end to the outsourcing of labor. The largest protests are most likely to occur in the capital Bogotá. Transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of large demonstrations, as is an enhanced security presence.
Context
Social tensions are on the rise across the country due to poor economic conditions following a decline in commodity prices, insecurity, and rampant corruption and tax evasion.
Advice
Individuals present in Colombia are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
