Colombia: Water supply disruptions reported across Cartagena on Nov. 23 amid pipeline damage

Officials temporarily suspend water distribution in Cartagena, Colombia, on Nov. 23 due to damage in raw water pipeline.

Warning

As of the afternoon of Nov. 23, water service disruptions are affecting 60 percent of Cartagena, including El Carmelo, La Concepcion, Chile, El Bosque, and Blas de Lazo areas due to damage to a raw water pipe in the Albornoz area. Approximately 180,000 people have limited or no water service. Aguas de Cartagena is working to repair the damage, but no timeline for restoration has been provided.

Depending on the extent of the damage, commercial disruptions are possible over the coming hours and possibly days, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water for operations. Minor protests may occur in response to the shortages.

If operating in the impacted areas, stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Water pressure and quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Minimize nonessential water. Avoid protests, and do not drive through roadblocks that may materialize. Heed instructions from authorities.
