Ghana: Heavy rains lead to flooding in the east as of July 28

Flooding isolates several parts of Nanumba North and South July 25; two fatalities reported as of July 28

Warning

Event

Heavy rains on Tuesday, July 25, caused flooding in Nanumba North and South districts. Reports say floodwaters destroyed bridges and roads, leaving several areas isolated from the rest of the country as of July 28. At least two people were reported dead after being swept away by floodwaters while traveling on rural roads. The area is expected to remain inaccessible for the near future.

Context

Flooding is an annual phenomenon during Ghana's rainy season from March to November. Fatalities are common in areas with improper drainage infrastructure.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to adhere to any advice issued by the regional authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products. Individuals traveling to Nanumba North or South by road should seek alternate forms of transportation or consider postponing travel until further notice.
