Guinea: Housing demolition in Conakry suburbs July 27

Event

On Thursday, July 27, army bulldozers reportedly demolished several houses located in the suburbs of the capital Conakry. According to local authorities, the operation is intended to clean-up  the area, suspected to house a dozen water sources on which archaic construction was built. As a consequence, hundreds of residents are currently homeless and sleeping outside during the rainy season. This situation could lead to protests from angry residents as neither alternative housing nor financial reparations have been provided to them. 

Context

Water and electricity shortages are a regular occurrence in Guinea. In addition, the whole country, particularly Conakry, is regularly affected by heavy rainfalls between May and September, resulting in major flooding.
