Madagascar: Public transportation ambushes on southern roads
Several fatal bush taxi attacks on roads leading to south of the island; take precautionary measures
Event
Several armed attacks reportedly occurred on roads leading to the south of Madagascar in the past week, as of Monday, July 24. Heavily armed men reportedly attacked three convoys of bush taxis, looting and injuring passengers, and killing one. On the RN7, in the Ambalavao district, a convoy of 23 bush taxis was attacked and looted, resulting in two passengers wounded. Two other bush taxi attacks took place in Vohiparara and Andina districts, where a security official escorting the convoy was shot dead by the bandits. The identity of the assailants remains unknown. In light of these security concerns, bush taxi companies threatened to strike; an emergency meeting was reportedly held with national gendarmerie in order to improve safety conditions on national roads. As such, police force deployment- e.g. foot patrols and convoy escorts - will be reinforced on roads leading to the south of the island.
Context
Crime rates are consistently high throughout Madagascar and have been on the rise in recent years. Violent assaults by armed groups on major highways are also increasing. Insecurity is particularly prevailing on the RN7 (Antananarivo - Toliara), the RN10 (Betioky - Andranovory), and the RN13 (Anbovomne - Ihosy) highways and, as such, should be avoided.
Advice
Due to the high crime rates in urban and tourist centers as well as on the roads, individuals in Madagascar are advised to remain vigilant at all times; do not walk by foot at night, be particularly vigilant after dark, drive with windows rolled up and doors locked. Avoid traveling through disadvantaged areas and/or far from the city center. Never resist if assaulted, as attackers may resort to violence. If in danger, go directly to the nearest police station.
