Forest fires intensify in central Portugal; thousands of firefighters deployed July 26

Over a dozen villages in central Portugal were evacuated after several wildfires, raging since Sunday, July 23, intensified on Tuesday evening, July 25, leaving residents without electricity.

Some 1700 firefighters are battling four different fires in the province of Castelo Branco and Santarem, 1095 of which are deployed in Sertã.

Although the fires are progressively been contained, strong winds, dry conditions, and severe temperatures are hampering firefighters’ efforts.

Context

The deadliest wildfire in Portugal’s history recently hit the country in June, killing 64 people and injuring more than 250 others. Some 7800 forest fires have erupted in Portugal since the beginning of the year.
