China: At least three injured by earthquake in Xinjiang /update 2

Event

At least three people were injured after an earthquake hit Xinjiang province on Wednesday, August 9. According to local reports, the injuries occurred after a house collapsed in Jinghe county. Only minor damage was reported in the sparsely-populated province. The earthquake came less than a day after a tremor of greater magnitude occurred in Sichuan province, leading to at least four deaths. Details are still emerging.

Context

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck Xinjiang at approximately 07:27 (local time). According to the USGS, the epicenter of the quake was 37 km (23 mi) south of Jinghe city at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). Additionally, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan province at approximately 21:19 (local time) on Tuesday, August 8. According to the USGS, the epicenter of that quake was 200 km (120 mi) northwest of Guangyuan at a depth of 10 km (6 mi).

Individuals in the area are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to any advice issued by the authorities. During an earthquake, protect your head from falling debris as best you can and only attempt to evacuate if on the ground floor. After a major earthquake, check buildings for damage, including downed power lines or damaged gas lines, and evacuate until the building is declared safe.
