Colombia: Humanitarian crisis in rural Antioquia amid strike /update 1

The UN reported on Monday, August 21, that approximately 22,000 residents of Segovia and Remedios (Antioquia department) face limited access to food, goods, services, and mobility as a result of an ongoing miner strike, launched on July 21. Reports say both demonstrations and roadblocks initiated by protesters in addition to security measures by the state are the root cause of the shortages. Additionally, further clashes between armed protesters and members of the Mobile Anti-Disturbance Squadron (ESMAD) are possible.

Context

Miners in Antioquia have been on an indefinite strike since July 21 in defense of traditional mining rights. At least three people have been killed to date during intermittent clashes between striking miners and members of the ESMAD. The strike is estimated to affect up to 95 percent of mining operations in the region.
