Guinea: Heavy rain results in major disruptions in Conakry

Heavy rains have hit the capital Conakry in August, leading to major transportation disruptions throughout the city

Warning

Event

Heavy rains have hit the capital Conakry and its surrounding areas throughout August, causing flooding and landslides throughout the city. A lack of adequate infrastructure and the presence of garbage piles on roads have hampered efficient drainage and resulted in severe disruptions in transportation. At least two children have been killed due to the floods.

More heavy rain is likely in the coming days, which could exacerbate the situation.

Context

The whole country, particularly Conakry, is regularly affected by heavy rainfall between May and September.

Advice

Individuals present in areas affected by heavy rains are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities and to monitor the situation via local media and weather reporting outlets. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
