India: Deadly landslide in Himachal Pradesh August 13

Deadly rain-induced landslide kills at least 46 in Himachal Pradesh on August 13; death toll likely to rise

Warning

Event

At least 46 people were killed in a major rain-induced landslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Sunday, August 13. Two buses were struck on the Pathakot-Mandi-Manali-Leh National Highway. Rescue operations are still underway as more bodies are still to be recovered, but heavy rain in the area is making it difficult for the army and the National Disaster Response Force to reach victims in the grabble. The death toll is likely to rise in the coming days.

Context

Recent heavy rains have caused significant flooding in at least 20 states throughout India.

The monsoon season in the west and southwest lasts from June to September. Torrential rains during this period can disrupt transportation and cause significant flooding.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and to adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
