Commuter trains will face disruptions in the Tel Aviv area over the coming week due to Israel Railways' planned upgrade works that began on Thursday, August 17. Herzeliya, Savidor, and University stations in Tel Aviv will be closed until Sunday, August 27. Due to the closures, northbound trains will terminate at Savidor Station and southbound trains at Bet Yehoshua Station.

Context

The upgrade works are necessary ahead of the launch of an express train linking Jerusalem to Tel Aviv The opening of the high-speed Jerusalem-Tel Aviv line is set for April 2018. The journey between the two cities will take only 28 minutes, down from the current 78 minutes. The project is projected to cost an estimated USD 1.8 billion. Once operational, the trains are slated to depart every 15 minutes in both directions with the capacity to hold 1000 passengers.
