Clashes broke out between protesting lawyers and security forces in Lahore on Monday, August 21. Lawyers demonstrating in support of the president of the Multan chapter of the Lahore High Court Bar Association’s (LHCBA) threw stones at officers outside Lahore High Court (LHC). Police officers used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the lawyers. According to media reports, all road access to the LH has been blocked by security forces and the protesters are organizing on Mall Road. There are unconfirmed reports that at least ten people were wounded in the clashes. The president of the LHCBA announced that lawyers across Punjab would hold a general strike on Tuesday, August 22. Further demonstrations may occur.

Context

The protest was organized in support of Sher Zaman Qureshi, the president of the Multan chapter of LHCBA, after the LHC issued an arrest warrant for him and suspended his license. Quershi, along with another lawyer, are accused of obstructing judicial proceedings in the Multan court on July 24. The protesters are demanding that the LHC drop the case against Qureshi and the other lawyers involved in the incident.
