Twenty prisoners awaiting trial escaped after a group of armed group ambushed their vehicle on Tuesday, August 22, in Johannesburg. The truck was ambushed on Pat Mbatha Road near the Southgate train station, while en route to the “Sun City” prison located south of Johannesburg. No injuries were reported. A large-scale search operation is still ongoing as of Thursday. Security forces are known to be heavy-handed and search operations could result in violent clashes.
