Southern and central Europe: Temperatures continue to surge August 9
Parts of central Europe and Italy still on red alert as “Lucifer” heatwave continues
Event
Severe weather warnings have been issued in Serbia, Montenegro, southern Italy, southern coastal Croatia, and southeastern Poland as temperatures are expected to rise to 38°C (100°F) in certain areas on Wednesday, August 9.
Context
Twenty-one countries in the region have recorded extreme temperatures since the beginning of the heatwave last week. Approximately ten people have reportedly died due to the extreme heat across the region.
Furthermore, the heat in combination with drought conditions led in part to wildfires that have erupted across southern Europe since mid-June, including in Montenegro, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Croatia.
Advice
Individuals in areas affected by the heatwave are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, remain well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), wear loose, light-colored clothing, and to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 10:00 and 15:00). Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if displaying symptoms of heatstroke (headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, lack of sweating despite high heat, rapid heartbeat, etc.).
