Uruguay: Storm alerts in much of the country August 29
Orange storm alerts issued for 16 of 19 Uruguay departments August 29; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued “orange” alerts - the second highest level on a four-tier scale - for 16 of the country’s 19 departments due to storms forecast to hit the region on Tuesday, August 29. The alerts are currently in place in the capital Montevideo as well as the departments of Canelones, Cerro Largo, Colonia, Durazno, Flores, Florida, Maldonado, Lavalleja, Paysandú, Río Negro, Rocha, San José, Soriano, Tacuarembó, and Treinta y Tres.
Up to 5 cm (2 in) of rain is expected to fall in certain areas within a short period and could result in flooding, particularly near rivers and in coastal areas. Violent thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds are also possible. Associated power outages and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Floods are not rare in Uruguay and can occur year round.
