Angola: Heightened security during presidential inauguration, Sept. 26 /update 4

The ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) president-elect, João Lourenço, is to be inaugurated in the capital city of Luanda on Tuesday, September 26. Heightened security and possible localized disruptions to travel should be expected. There is also the chance of protests and an associated crackdown by security forces.

Context

Lourenço will replace current president Jos Eduardo dos Santos after 38 years in power. The constitutional court officially affirmed the results of the August 23 presidential election on September 13, after it rejected appeals previously filed by opposition parties. Despite validation by the court, the ceremony could be boycotted by some opposition parties.
