China: Typhoon Talim to make landfall on September 14

Event

Tropical storm Talim is forecast to strengthen into a typhoon in the morning (local time) of Tuesday, September 12, as it continues on a path to the northwest. As of 03:00 on Tuesday, Talim was located about 1300 km (800 mi) east of Taiwan. Talim is expected to make landfall in China on Thursday, September 14, and continue northeastward on Friday, September 15. Fujian, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu provinces will be most impacted by flooding and gusty winds. Whether the coast or the inland is most affected depends of the typhoon’s speed to turn northeastward. In either case, Shanghai will be at risk of heavy rain.

China's National Meteorological Center on Tuesday warned that Typhoon Talim could intensify and turn into a super typhoon.

Context

Tropical storms and typhoons are common in the region between July and November, with a peak of storms typically observed in the last weeks of August and the first weeks of September.

Regarding flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock an adult over.
