Major clashes erupted between Finnish police and over a dozen asylum seekers at the Salmiranta refugee center in Jyvaskyla (central Finland) on Monday, September 4.
Asylum seekers reportedly formed a human chain temporarily foiling the police’s attempt to deport an Afghan family, resulting in a seven hour standoff. However, police eventually called for backup and resorted to the use of pepper spray against certain demonstrators. At least two protesters have been arrested.

According to Finnish authorities, 11,000 of the 25,000 currently registered asylum seekers have had their application denied, fueling tensions and frustration.
