Finland: Multiple groups to demonstrate in Helsinki to mark Independence Day on Dec. 6

Several activist groups will demonstrate in Helsinki, Finland, Dec. 6 to mark Independence Day. Heightened security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Several activist groups plan to demonstrate in central Helsinki on Dec. 6 as the country marks its Independence Day. Helsinki Police have intervened to amend the details of some gatherings in recent days to limit potential disruptions or in response to security concerns; further changes are possible with little warning. The following gatherings are confirmed:

  • 16:00: Students will hold a torchlit procession from Hietaniemi cemetery to Senate Square. The march route includes Hietaniemenkatu, Arkadiankatu, Pohjoisesplanadi, Presidentinlinna, Mariankatu, and Aleksanterinkatu.

  • 16:00: The Finland Wake Up (Suomi Heraa) activist group will march from Helsinki Railway Square to Parliament House in Mannerheimintie. Although the demonstration typically has a low attendance, a large police detachment will likely accompany the march.

  • 17:00: The 612 activist group will hold a torchlit procession from Toolontori Square to Hietaniemi cemetery; however, the march route will be determined by police on the day.

  • 17:00: The Helsinki Without Nazis activist group has announced a demonstration in Toolontori Square; however, police indicate they will move the gathering to Taivallahti Square to avoid the 612 gathering, though this remains unconfirmed.

Police will deploy in significant numbers throughout the city center on Dec. 6. Road closures and diversions are likely, causing significant transport and business disruptions. Clashes between different activist groups are possible, posing incidental risks to bystanders.

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check local traffic conditions and public transport schedules for disruptions, and allow additional time to reach destinations near related events. Heed all official directives. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
