Finland: Activists to demonstrate in several cities Dec. 15
Activists to protest in central Helsinki, Lahti, Lappeenranta, and Tampere, Finland, Dec. 15. Heightened security likely.
Activists plan to protest in central Helsinki, Lahti, Lappeenranta, and Tampere Dec. 15. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce the continued closure of Finland's land border with Russia. Several hundred participants may attend; the largest demonstration will most likely take place in Helsinki. Demonstrations are planned at the following locations:
Helsinki: March from Rautatientori to Senate Square from 12:00.
Lahti: March from Mannerheim Equestrian Statue on Mannerheiminkatu to Lahti Market Square from 13:00.
Lappeenranta: Protest at St. Mary's Square from 12:00.
Tampere: March from Sorin Aukio to Keskustori from 12:00.
Law enforcement officers will likely deploy at protest sites and along march routes to facilitate gatherings. Processions and road closures will likely disrupt vehicular transport. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out. The Helsinki demonstration may partially obstruct entry and exit to Helsinki Central Station around noon; however, rail service disruptions are unlikely.
Avoid protest areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any protest or procession areas. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
