India: 15 killed in stampede at Mumbai train station Sep. 29

At least 15 people were killed and 20 others injured in a stampede triggered by overcrowding and heavy rain at Mumbai’s Elphinstone railway station on Friday, September 29. A footbridge became crowded with commuters seeking shelter from heavy rain and the stampede occurred as individuals all tried to move at the same time. It is unclear what prompted the sudden movement; an investigation has been launched.

Mumbai (Maharashtra state) continues to be subjected to heavy monsoon rains, resulting in significant flooding and transportation disruptions. Torrential rain is common in India during the monsoon season, which runs between June and September. Mumbai has seen particularly heavy rainfall this year, with a reported increase in water-borne diseases in the city since the end of August.
