Iraq: Bombing near Nasiriyah September 14

Car bomb and raid leave at least 50 dead in restaurant near Nasiriyah September 14

Warning

Event

A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated on Thursday, September 14, near Fidak restaurant on Highway 1, approximately 25 km (15.5 mi) northwest of Nasiriyah (Dhi Qar governorate). Following the VBIED explosion, an unknown number of gunmen attacked the restaurant, which is located close to a security checkpoint. At least 50 people have been killed, with figures likely to rise. Furthermore, at least half of the victims are likely Iranian pilgirms en route to the holy city of Karbala. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

Attacks are relatively rare in southern Iraq; however, as Islamic State (IS) forces are defeated in northern Iraq, retaliatory attacks nationwide are increasingly likely.

Advice

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
