Madagascar: Abduction linked to cattle theft leaves two dead

Clashes break out in Malaimbady, southwestern Madagascar, following an abduction linked to cattle theft; two people killed

Informational

Event

Officials reported on Monday, August 28, that a woman was abducted by bandits in Malaimbandy, southwestern Madagascar. Violent clashes reportedly broke out between bandits and police forces following the abduction, resulting in the deaths of the victim and one bandit.

Context

In 2016, there were 32 reported cases of abductions related to cattle theft, as bandits often use hostages as collateral during attempted cattle raids.

Kidnappings-for-ransom targeting business professionals of other ethnicities and nationalities are also relatively common. Foreign visitors to the country, including business travelers and expatriates, are also at risk due to their perceived affluence.

Advice

Due to high crime rates, including the risk of kidnapping (especially in urban and tourist centers such as Antananarivo, Tamatave, Majunga, Tulear, and Diego Suarez), individuals are advised to take the necessary precautions to minimize their risk of abduction: vary routes and schedules, be discreet regarding plans, avoid posting personal information on social networks (as it can be used by criminals to track targets), be particularly vigilant after dark, regularly review and update security standards at your residence, drive with windows closed and doors locked, etc. If you ever feel in danger, go directly to the nearest police station and/or report it to your security officer.
