Mexico: Indigenous fair in Mexico City September 1-10

The fourth annual fair of Indigenous Cultures, Native Peoples and Original Neighborhoods began on Friday, September 1, in Mexico City, and will end on Sunday, September 10. The fair is located at Zocalo square and daily events have been planned between 10:00 (local time) and 21:00. Approximately 500,000 people are expected to attend the festival,  which features concerts and presentations.

An increased police presence will be deployed to the capital area for the duration of the fair, and security checkpoints were erected on major roads, including Plaza de Constitution, Calle Monte de Piedad, Jose Maria Pino Suarez, Calle 5 de Febrero, and Calle 16 de Septiembre

Transportation disruptions are likely in Mexico City during the fair.

Context

The fair of Indigenous Cultures, Native Peoples and Original Neighborhoods began in 2013 and is sponsored by the Mexican government, as part of an attempt to showcase indigenous culture. Several indigenous groups participate in the fair, which is considered a major tourist attraction.
