Nicaragua: Busy travel period September 14-17

Event

Some 100,000 foreign and Nicaraguan tourists are expected to travel throughout the country during the September 14-17 holiday period, known as the fiestas patrias. Major destinations include the island of Ometepe, San Juan del Sur, Matagalpa, Jinotega, and Chontales. Increased congestion on the roads and in transportation hubs is likely.

As is generally the case during holiday seasons, crime rates and rates of traffic accidents are expected to rise. An additional police presence is likely on highways (e.g. speed traps and sobriety checkpoints), beaches, and other areas where tourists and vacationers tend to gather.
