Pakistan: Flooding kills at least 164 as of September 7

According to Pakistani authorities, as of Thursday, September 7, severe flooding has killed at least 164 people and injured 167 more since the end of June. Local news sources also reported that 440 house have been destroyed. Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is providing food and shelter to hundreds of displaced persons.

Heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming days and until the end of the monsoon season.

Context

Torrential rainfall is not unusual in the region during monsoon season, which runs from June to September. On August 20, another wet spell killed at least 22 people and injured several others. More than 1200 people in South Asia have died from monsoon rains this summer, with around 41 million more displaced or otherwise affected by the flooding and consequent landslides.
