Taiwan: Typhoon Talim to make landfall on September 13

Typhoon Talim to make landfall on Taiwan on September 13; gusty winds, flooding, and mudslides possible

Warning

Event

Tropical storm Talim is forecast to strengthen into a typhoon in the morning (local time) of Tuesday, September 12, as it continues on a path to the northwest. As of 03:00 on Tuesday, Talim was located about 1300 km (800 mi) east of Taiwan. Talim is expected to make landfall on Taiwan on Wednesday, September 13. Wind and rain will therefore increase across northern Taiwan late Wednesday; the most intense rain and wind will occur Wednesday night into Thursday, as Talim passes over or near Taiwan’s northern region. Rainfall of 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8 in) is expected across northern Taiwan, including Taipei, which will most likely prompt flooding and subsequent mudslides.

China's National Meteorological Center on Tuesday warned that Typhoon Talim could intensify and turn into a super typhoon.

Context

The rainy season (monsoon season) in Taiwan runs from June until October.

Advice

Individuals in Taiwan are advised to confirm travel reservations, to allow for extra time to reach their destinations, to keep abreast of weather forecasts, and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products.
