Canada: Uber to remain in Québec despite threats to leave /update 1
Ridesharing service Uber to remain in Québec province despite threats to leave October 16
Event
On Friday, October 13, Uber announced it would continue its operations in Québec, backing down from previous threats to leave the province over stricter regulations. According to the San Francisco-based ridesharing service, the decision followed a constructive dialogue with Québec's transportation ministry.
Context
Provincial officials issued new regulations in September that will require all drivers to undergo at least 35 hours of training, matching that required of taxi drivers. On September 26, Uber's Québec general manager had threatened to cease operations throughout the province.
Uber currently employs some 50 full-time personnel in its Montréal office and over 10,000 drivers on a freelance basis.
