India: Security operation in southern Kashmir October 25

Military launches security operation in southern Kashmir’s Shopian district October 25

Warning

Event

At least 12 villages in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir were cordoned off for security activity and search operations on Wednesday, October 25. According to local sources, the security operation followed reports of militant activity in the area. Details are still emerging, but ongoing or residual operations and associated disruptions should be anticipated in the region.

Context

Kashmir's security forces have been under increased pressure in recent months as militants have stepped up attacks on police and military forces. The Kashmir region has been divided between India and Pakistan since the end of British rule in 1947. Both claim the territory in its entirety.

Advice

Some foreign governments advise against travel to parts of Jammu and Kashmir, in particular the border region with Pakistan, due to the high threat of terrorism and other violence.
