Activists to hold shutdown strikes and related protests in parts of Rajasthan State, India, through mid-November. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Activists from several Hindu organizations plan to stage shutdown strikes (bandh) and related demonstrations in parts of Rajasthan State through at least mid-November. The purpose of the action to demand authorities take stricter action against the persons responsible for July incident in which stones were thrown at Hindus participating in a religious procession. Activists began staging an indefinite bandh in Jahazpur as of Nov. 15. Officials reportedly detained eight people during a demonstration outside a local police station. Additionally, organizers have announced the following planned shutdown strikes:

  • Nov. 16: Jahazpur

  • Nov. 17: Shahpura

  • Nov. 18: Bhilwara and Shahpura

  • Nov. 19: Chittor

Further demonstrations of varying types could occur in parts of Rajasthan. Potential rally sites include prominent markets, government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Participation will probably vary by location. Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such gatherings that materialize. Officials could deploy a heightened security presence in the affected regions.

Depending on the severity of the perceived threat, the government could enact enhanced restrictions. Clashes between activists and police or between members of opposing groups cannot be ruled out. Further mass arrests are possible. Isolated security incidents, including vandalism, could occur. Associated localized business and transport disruptions are highly likely.

Avoid any demonstrations that materialize due to potential clashes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for localized business and transport disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
