Nicaragua: Intense rainy season coming to a close

Nicaragua, like much of Central America, has been hit by an abnormally intense rainy season that has left at least 25 people dead since the beginning of October, including ten people in the past week. Daily precipitation levels up to 10 cm (4 in) have been reported in some municipalities. Conditions in many parts of the country began to improve over the weekend (October 28-29), with river levels in several provinces falling. However, there remains a risk of further flooding and landslides.

The annual rainy season in Nicaragua typically runs from May to October. Precipitation levels in September and October 2017 have been above average, in large part due to a particularly active Atlantic hurricane season.

Individuals in Nicaragua are advised to monitor local weather forecasts, adhere to any advice or instructions issued by local authorities, and be prepared for associated transportation disruptions. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Finally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, all items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and any foodstuffs discarded.
