Panama: Nationwide transportation strike October 25

Nationwide ground transportation strike planned in Panama on Wednesday, October 25; significant transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

The Panamanian Cámara Nacional de Transporte (CANATRA) and the Consejo de Transporte del Interior (COTRADIN) unions have scheduled a nationwide ground transportation strike for Wednesday, October 25. Significant disruptions, affecting coach bus companies, tourism services, cargo transportation, and school buses - and consequent disruptions to commerce - are expected throughout the country, particularly in urban areas.

Context

The planned strike aims to address grievances over recent measures taken by the Panamanian Autoridad del Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (ATTT) and transit police to remove illegal "alternative buses" from operation. It is also in response to Uber's operation in the country, lingering disputes over the introduction of Transporte Masivo de Panama (Panama Mass Transit) to Colón province, and controversy over possible transportation law changes.

Advice

Individuals in Panama are advised to allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
