Portugal: Wildfires persist in Coimbra district Oct. 10 /update 1

At least 11 wildfires continue to burn throughout central Portugal as of October 10; worst-hit areas in Coimbra district

At least 11 wildfires are currently active in Portugal as of Tuesday, October 10, exacerbated by heavy winds. Authorities have activated 1500 firefighters and 200 military personnel to combat the blazes, primarily located in Coimbra district. Officials have reported that the most serious fire near Pampilhosa da Serra has been brought under control. However, two areas of Arganil have been evacuated as a precaution due to the approaching wildfire. Furthermore, at least four people have been injured in Anadia, Aveiro district.

The Interior Ministry announced that the fires were likely man-made. Additionally, authorities warned that high temperatures and dry weather in the near-term forecast brings the risk that the wildfires may spread.

Context

The deadliest wildfire in Portugal's history hit the country in June, killing 64 people and injuring more than 250 others. At least 2100 km² (810 mi²) of forest was destroyed by fires in the summer, more than double the average for that period.
