St. Martin/St. Barth: Electricity fully restored amid post-Irma recovery

Electricity service was fully restored on the French islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy on Sunday, October 15. Officials now plan to begin a larger reconstruction of the islands electricity grids. Telecommunications networks have almost been completely restored on both islands. However, only 63 percent of households on Saint Martin reportedly have running water. Schools have reopened on Saint Barthélemy, and half of schools on Saint Martin have resumed classes. An estimated 7000 residents have yet to return to the islands.

Context

Reconstruction efforts continue five weeks after Hurricane Irma hit the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy, causing major damage and leaving the islands without electricity, telecommunications, and fresh water service. "Emergency electricity" was restored in both Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy on September 8, supplying the islands' hospitals as well as the airport in Saint Barthélemy. Officials initially estimated that it would take several months to restore full electricity and telecommunications service on the islands.
