United States: Wildfires nearly contained in California as of Oct. 24 /update 6
Wildfires across California nearly contained as of October 24, but high risk of fire in southern California persists amid high temperatures and windy conditions forecast through October 25
Event
Firefighters have nearly fully contained nine active wildfires across California as of Tuesday, October 24. Many of the remaining fires are projected to be completely contained by the end of the week. Up-to-date information can be found on the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) website.
However, much of southern California remains under a Red Flag Warning (the highest level) through Wednesday, October 25, due to critical weather conditions. According to current forecasts, temperatures in the southern part of the state are expected to rise above 37°C (100°F), with sustained winds reaching up to 64 km/h (40 mph), leading to a heightened risk of further fire outbreaks.
Context
A series of large fires initially broke out overnight in northern California on October 8-9 and quickly spread, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 people and leaving thousands more homeless.
Wildfires are common in California during the hot and dry summer and early autumn months. Rugged terrain and dry conditions - exacerbated by years of drought – make it particularly difficult to contain fires in the region once they have broken out.
Advice
Individuals are advised to exercise caution when traveling in areas affected by the wildfires, to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and to keep abreast of the situation.
Additionally, individuals in areas affected by extreme temperatures are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, to remain well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), to wear loose, light-colored clothing, and to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 10:00 and 15:00). Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if displaying symptoms of heatstroke (headache, dizziness, muscle weakness, lack of sweating despite high heat, rapid heartbeat, etc.).
