Uruguay: Numerous storm alerts issued Oct. 17
Orange and storm alerts issued for various departments on October 17; heavy rain, violent winds, and hail forecast

The Uruguayan meteorological institute INUMET has issued “orange” alerts - the second highest level - for five western and central departments due to storms forecast to hit the region on Tuesday, October 17. The alerts are currently in place for the departments of Salto, Paysandú, Río Negro, Tacuarembó, and Durazno. Up to 6 cm (2.5 in) of rain is expected to fall in certain areas within a short period and could result in flooding, particularly near rivers. Violent thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds are also forecast. Associated power outages and transportation disruptions cannot be ruled out.
Lower yellow alerts are also in place in the departments of Artigas, Rivera, Cerro Largo, Treinta y Tres, Rocha, Lavalleja, Florida, Flores, and Soriano.

Floods are relatively common in Uruguay and can occur year round.
