Canada: Heightened terror risk from returning IS fighters
Government highlights heightened terror risk due to return of Islamic State (IS) fighters from Iraq and Syria
Event
On November 20, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted the rising threat of terrorism in Canada as Islamic State (IS) fighters return to their home countries in increasing numbers in the wake of the group's defeats in Syria and Iraq. The Canadian government announced it would prosecute individuals in breach of Canadian terrorist laws but stated it would also attempt to reintegrate former fighters into society.
While there is currently no information concerning any specific known threat, an increased security presence is likely throughout Canada, particularly in major cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Montréal.
Context
Approximately 180 Canadians are known to have joined the ranks of IS. Approximately 60 fighters have already returned to Canada, although it is unclear how many more will follow.
