Warning

Event

Officials reported on Monday, November 27, that at least 20 people had been killed in renewed fighting between the Oromo and Somali ethnic groups from November 20-27. Additionally, 103 people have been arrested in Oromia and Somali states in recent weeks in connection to clashes that erupted between the two ethnic groups in August and September. Government officials also stated that they are working to resettle thousands of people that had been displaced by the fighting. Military and police forces continue to maintain a large presence in the region to maintain order, and government officials are continuing ongoing mediation efforts.

Context

Tensions between the Oromo and Somali communities have increased after fighting broke out in early August near the towns of Harar and Babile, with fighting continuing through September. According to government officials, the conflict displaced at least 200,000 people and killed hundreds more. The two groups are involved in a historical dispute over the territorial boundaries between the Somali and Oromo regional states.

Advice

Individuals in Ethiopia, especially in the Oromia and Somali regions, are advised to keep abreast of the situation, remain vigilant, and avoid any form of public demonstration or public gathering due to the risk of violence. Adhere to any instructions issued by authorities.
