On Tuesday, November 21, police arrested six Syrian nationals suspected of planning attacks on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) militant group. The suspects were arrested during raids in the cities of Kassel, Hanover, Essen, and Leipzig. Authorities believe the suspects were planning to attack a public location in Germany using weapons or explosives. Police officials did not state if the suspects were planning to attack a specific target.  

Context

Terrorism continues to be a chief public concern throughout Europe due to the various attacks in recent years, prompting member states to increase security. On December 19, 2016, a truck deliberately drove into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring another 56. The suspect was allegedly encouraged inspired by IS. Other attacks have been perpetrated in Barcelona, Paris, Istanbul, Madrid, and London.
