On Tuesday, October 31, German federal police announced a Syrian national had been arrested in the northeastern city of Schwerin for allegedly planning a major bomb attack. According to police forces, it remains unclear whether the suspect - although motivated by extremist Islamist ideology - is affiliated with any specific terrorist organization.

Context

According to media reports, over 900 terrorism-related cases have been opened up by German federal courses as of January 2017. This marks a sharp rise in terrorism cases per year with only 250 proceedings launched in 2016.

Terrorism continues to be a chief public concern throughout Europe due to the various attacks in recent years, prompting member states to tighten their homeland security. On December 19, 2016, a truck deliberately drove into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring another 56. The suspect was allegedly encouraged inspired by the Islamic State (IS). Other attacks have been perpetrated in Barcelona, Paris, Istanbul, Madrid, and London.
