Israel: Tel Aviv Uber ban to go into effect November 29

Ban on Uber's ride-sharing services to go into effect November 29 in Tel Aviv area; Uber-operated licensed taxi services to continue

Warning

Event

On Monday, November 27, an Israeli court ordered Uber to suspend ride-sharing services in Tel Aviv beginning on Wednesday, November 29. The indefinite ban will enter into effect at 10:00 (local time) on Wednesday. It will affect Uber's pilot ride-sharing programs, called UberDAY and UberNIGHT, in the Tel Aviv area. Licensed taxi services available through the company's app will continue throughout the country.

Context

Uber began its ride-sharing pilot program in the Tel Aviv area in October 2016. The US company has faced opposition in the country from the Transportation Ministry, taxi drivers, and other ride-hailing companies. Monday's decision comes after a legal battle with the Taxi Driver Union over Uber's alleged use of drivers who lack business licenses and insurance. The Transportation Ministry also sued Uber in May, claiming that Israeli law forbids transporting passengers for money without a taxi license; the case is still pending.

Advice

Individuals present in the Tel Aviv area are advised to anticipate increased demand and potential delays on alternative modes of transportation.
