Italy: Transportation sector strikes November 9-10 /update 1

Event

Rail workers will hold a 24-hour strike starting Thursday, November 9, at 21:00 (local time), to protest socioeconomic disparities, the progressive privatization of the public sector, the liberalization of the labor force, and ongoing discrimination against migrants and women. Italy’s two main rail companies - Trenitalia and Italo - have announced that all trains on major rail lines are expected to be operated, but delays are likely and cancelations cannot be ruled out. More significant disruptions are expected on regional lines. Public transit workers in Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, and Naples will be on strike all day November 10; significant disruptions are likely although minimum services will nevertheless be provided during rush hours.

Meanwhile, a nationwide strike by air traffic controllers (ATCs) initially set to take place on November 10 has been canceled. However, ATCs at Rome-Fiumicino International Airport (FCO), Brescia-Montichiari Airport (VBS), and Naples International Airport (NAP) have announced they still intend to strike from 13:00 to 17:00 (local time). Very limited impact is expected.

Context

Transportation-related strikes are common in Italy and can be highly disruptive. However, in accordance with Italian law, minimum levels of services must be guaranteed during all strikes.
