Mexico: Major protest in Oaxaca November 7

Major protest paralyzes city of Oaxaca November 7; further protests possible in coming days

Informational

Event

A major protest by members of the CTM labor union (Confederación de Trabajadores de México) caused significant disruptions in the city of Oaxaca on Tuesday, November 7. At least 20 roadblocks were erected throughout Oaxaca and its suburbs, forcing the suspension of more than half the city’s public transit system as well as long-distance bus travel.

The protest was called for following the arrest of the leader of the CTM, accused of murder, the day prior. Further demonstrations, with the potential to turn violent, are possible in the coming days and weeks in Oaxaca.

Context

Strikes and protests are common in Oaxaca and other southern states - notably those organized by the powerful CNTE teacher union (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación) - and can result in major transportation disruptions as well as associated shortages of fuel, medicine, and food in the event of long-term blockades.

Advice

Individuals in Oaxaca are advised to avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for violence and to never attempt to cross a roadblock without authorization.
