Clashes break out between sub-Saharan migrants and residents of Casablanca on November 24

Informational

Event

Brief clashes reportedly broke out in in the Derb Al-Kebir district in Casablanca on Friday night, November 24, between sub-Saharan migrants and residents. Hundreds of migrants reportedly live in shelters in the area. The clashes allegedly started with a minor dispute, but the situation escalated as young people from both sides took to fighting, lighting garbage on fire, burning tires, and throwing rocks. No injuries were reported.

Context

Morocco has witnessed an influx of sub-Saharan African migrants, as many attempt to pass through the country in order to reach Europe. However, even though thousands make the risky journey across the Mediterranean Sea, many more migrants end up staying in the kingdom instead. A current integration campaign is in the process of reviewing some 25,000 applications from migrants seeking residency in the country. Previously, in 2014, some 23,000 requests from migrants were granted.

Advice

Individuals in Morocco are advised to avoid any clashes or public confrontations due to the risk of violent escalation.
