Morocco: Deadly stampede over food aid in Essaouira province November 19

Event

At least 15 people were killed and five people injured in a stampede during the distribution of food aid on Sunday, November 19. The incident reportedly occurred in the village of Sidi Boulaalam in Essaourira province, some 150 km (90 miles) south-west of Casablanca. Authorities have reportedly opened an investigation into the incident.

Context

The distribution of food aid by private organization and the government is common in Morocco. Persistent drought in recent years has negatively impacted agricultural production in the country, and caused the price many basic food items to rise.
