Nicaragua: Deadly post-election violence November 6
Five killed in political violence on November 6 following announcement of November 5 municipal elections results
Event
Nicaragua held municipal elections - marked by high abstention rates - throughout the country on Sunday, November 5. The ruling Sandinista coalition dominated the vote, winning 135 of the 153 mayoral positions up for grabs, including in the capital Managua. According to international observers from the Organization of American States (OAS), no significant irregularities were detected. However, accusations of fraud were levied by other groups, leading to high sociopolitical tensions and violence.
Five people were reportedly killed and 11 injured in post-electoral violence that broke out in various areas of the country, notably in northern and Caribbean zones, after the results were published on Monday morning. In one such incident, clashes broke out between members of the Yatama party (representing indigenous peoples) and Sandinistas in Sandy Bay Sirpi; Yatama members had gathered to protest, claiming they were not permitted to cast their votes. Two people were killed in that incident and three others injured.
Further protests and political violence may occur in the coming days and weeks, particularly in rural areas and in Managua.
Advice
Individuals present in Nicaragua are advised to exercise increased vigilance in the coming weeks, avoid all protests, and keep abreast of the situation.
